Elevator
The elevator floor indicator helps us to understand where
the elevator is at the time of operation. Each rectangle is apart of a sequence
that informs us of the use and function of the elevator. The floor the elevator
is currently occupying or passing by is lit up by the corresponding light, to
help the embedded information stand out.
By beginning the floor levels with the highest floor, it
provides an almost reverse-visualization of which way the elevator is moving. For
me, when I look at the way the lights of the elevator move while the elevator
reaches a destination, there is a slope pictorial image in my head that shows
the sliding up and down of the elevator. Normally, most elevators are the
opposite order, so this could have been a design choice or just the type of
elevator being used.
This information is important to help individuals —waiting
for the elevator— have a sense of what is going on. Additionally, waiting for
elevators is something that society as a whole is accustomed to, and these
moving lights, and even sounds, help people keep up with the cues on when to
enter and exit the elevator. Additionally, people are exceedingly impatient
nowadays, and having a visual representation of what is going on in front of
them, especially when it is surrounding patience and a time frame, helps tremendously.
The information is communicated to us through the use of
lights and even sounds. The information is clear, simple and easy to digest
— which is important when designing information graphics. The typeface is
beyond simplistic, and is easily read by any individuals who come across this
elevator.
Visual cues are huge when helping people process
information, especially when others around them are affected by their use of
the information. As mentioned above, the lights help people to understand the
way in which the elevator is being utilized, when the elevator is accessible to
them and how to gauge their time while interacting with the elevator.
